Long before farming began, people ate wild plants. That knowledge never fully disappeared — it survives in rural communities, in old cookbooks, and today it's being reclaimed by producers who deliberately choose foraging.
How much do we actually know about wild plants?
Researchers have documented around 7,000 edible plant species used for food throughout human history worldwide — compared with only around 150 to 200 species commercially cultivated today, and the roughly 15 crops that, according to the FAO, supply most of the world's calorie intake. Foraging therefore taps back into a fraction of that knowledge: wild herbs, berries, mushrooms and wild vegetables that were never brought into industrial agriculture, because they don't standardise or machine-harvest well — not because they're less valuable.
Sustainability as a baseline requirement
Responsible foraging follows firm rules: harvest only what allows populations to recover, avoid rare and protected species, and consistently pass on knowledge about the risk of confusion with poisonous plants. That care is what separates sustainable foraging from simple depletion of natural stocks.
